An Hour in the Life of a Woman in STEM

Ever wondered what it would be like to make electricity from the sun, work for NASA or research Astrobiology?

We've got two inspiring women in STEM who want to talk to you about their jobs and how they got them! They discuss their career, show you their workplace and answer any questions you have about their jobs. Who knows, you could be working with them in the future! There will also be a Women in STEM quiz with a chance to win prizes...

Nic Ponsford - The Global Equality Collective

Nic is a mum of 3 and an award-winning digital education specialist.

Nic Ponsford FRSA is the Co-CEO and Founder of ​The Gender Equality Collective​.

She is an educational and technology thought leader, a Harvard author (​TechnoTeaching​), award-winning teacher, ​TES columnist​ and ​EdTech50​ Judge. Nicole is also a frequent contributor to ​The Guardian​, ​Innovate My School​ and ​Teachwire​, as well as a keynote speaker and panelist, most recently at BETT20 and for the RSA.

Nic believes that technology is the great equaliser for our time. She has taught new technologies in the education sector (from Early Years to adults) since the start of the century, working with a range of national and international charities and organisations to support #TechForGood. She was awarded a place on the EdTech50 (2018) as one of the fifty leading pioneers in the UK EdTech sector. She is currently supporting the Dfe ​Edtech Demonstrator Schools and Colleges Programme​ as the SW Regional Lead.

Nic is passionate about diversity and inclusive on and offline - and that this will only happen through collaboration, conversation and immediate action. She believes it’s time to get #SmashingStereotypes; to promote the awesome in everyone - in the media, in education, in workplaces and in homes. Nic is also co-lead for ​LeanInGirlsUK​ and a Steering Group member for ​MITEY​ (Men in the Early Years), and started a Doctorate in 2018 researching the UK’s digital gender gap and bias in education.

Speaker:

Abigail Tattersfield - STEM Ambassador and Forensic Scientist

Abigail is a Forensic Biology graduate and International Security and Risk Management student with a keen interest in CBRNe counter-terrorism.

Alongside her studies, she is currently working for the NHS to provide diagnostic tests for SARS-CoV-2, she is a lecturer at the University of South Wales and a STEM ambassador with STEM Ambassadors UK.

Pre-pandemic, Abigail worked as a technical demonstrator on the spectroscopy in a suitcase scheme by the Royal Society of Chemistry.

Mae gan Abigail radd mewn Bioleg Fforensig ac mae'n fyfyriwr MSc mewn Diogelwch Rhyngwladol a Rheolaeth Risg gyda diddordeb brwd mewn gwrthderfysgaeth CBRNe.

Ochr yn ochr â’i hastudiaethau, mae hi'n gweithio i’r GIG i ddarparu profion diagnostig ar gyfer SARS-CoV-2, mae hi’n ddarlithydd ym Mhrifysgol De Cymru ac yn llysgennad STEM gyda STEM Ambassadors UK.

Cyn y pandemig, bu Abigail yn gweithio fel arddangoswr technegol ar y sbectrosgopeg mewn cynllun gan y Gymdeithas Cemeg Frenhinol.
