Event description

Description

A talk presented by the Friends of the Blackden Trust, featuring David Jennings, Chief Executive Officer of the York Archaeological Trust.

In 2004-5, York Archaeological Trust undertook two excavations in an area of one of Roman York's major cemeteries. Discovering 82 skeletons, overwhelmingly adult males with numerous injuries, pathological conditions and burial rites, these people displayed signs of having led a life that had physically left its mark on their bodies, while also being treated differently at their time of death and burial. Since their discovery, they have been the subject of at least three Television documentaries, with a theory being developed that they were gladiators. If so they give us extraordinary insights into the realities of an aspect of Roman culture that still fascinates us today - life and death in the Roman Arena.

There is huge interest in this subject, and early booking is advised as interest is already buiilding and this promises to be one of our most popular events. After the talk, refreshments will be available, with the chance to meet the speaker and members and friends of the Blackden Trust.
