Explore the history of transport in Glasgow with our Doors Open Day leisurely free cycle ride, led by trained cycle ride leaders

About this event

*Please note that this event is now fully booked and we have a waiting list set up via Eventbrite*

For Glasgow Doors Open Day we have organised a free guided cycle ride exploring some of the history of transport in Glasgow.

We will be meeting at the Tradeston Bridge* and cycling along to where the old vehicular ferry and pedestrian ferry crossed the Clyde as well as the old pedestrian tunnel. Then we will cycle to the Queen Mary and the Waverley at Prince's Dock and view over at the former graving dock in Govan. After we will cycle along the former Lanarkshire to Dunbartonshire railway line from Whiteinch to Scotstoun on our way to Heart of Scotstoun Community Centre. They are putting on a special free exhibition for Doors Open Day (the Saturday only!) about Albion Motors which used to employ a large number of local people and had an extensive plant nearby. We will then return back along the path and finish at Riverside Museum and Tall Ship to take in its impressive collection of transport related exhibits.

We will stop at the various points along the route to explore and discuss some of the history.

*we will meet on the north side of the Tradeston Bridge, by the NextBike stop and National Cycle Network milepost.

Further information

  • You will need to bring your own bike and make sure it is in a good working condition (or one from a hire bike scheme like NextBike - see more below)
  • The ride is suitable for most types of riders as we will be on 7 miles of traffic-free/shared-use paths the whole way, following National Cycle Network (NCN) Routes 75 and 7.
  • The ride will be at a leisurely pace in order to accommodate all riders
  • The ride is led and supervised by qualified Sustrans cycle ride leaders at all times
  • There will be a comfort break at roughly the halfway point at the Heart of Scotstoun Community Centre.
  • Please bring weather-appropriate clothing, snacks, and water

There are plenty of NextBikes to hire (should you need one) around Glasgow. For more information, please visit: https://www.nextbike.co.uk/en and check the 'Locations' tab and zoom into Glasgow for more detail of the stops. There is a NextBike station where we will be meeting by the Tradeston Bridge (Station number: 8413), but also Scottish Event Campus (8415), Glasgow Science Centre (8426), Riverside Museum (8416), Central Station (8401), and St Enoch Square (8410).

If you take a NextBike out, you will be able to return it at the Riverside Museum where we will be finishing the ride.

The Glasgow Doors Open Days Festival runs from 16-22 September 2019 with venues across Glasgow open to the public. For more information on the Festival and a list of all buildings, please visit: www.glasgowdoorsopendays.org.uk; www.facebook.com/GlasgowDoorsOpenDays; twitter.com/GlasgowDOD
