Corporate capture of COP26: What is it, and how can it be stopped?
About this event

This event is being held as part of Edinburgh World Justice Festival.
Big polluters have tried to capture the UN Climate talks in the past and will no doubt try to do it again in 2021, when Glasgow hosts arguably the most important climate talks of all time: The 26th Annual Meeting of the UN’s Conference of Parties - otherwise known as COP26.
Despite the urgent need for climate action, previous COPs have been far from successful. International agreements have been inadequate, and shockingly, major polluting corporations have had a significant presence, helping impede the serious action needed to avert complete catastrophe.
Recent revelations have also revealed that similar forces are already at play for COP26.
So, as we witness climate breakdown around us, what can we do to lessen the corporate capture of these talks?
This online workshop will feature presentations from three speakers:
- Lala Hakuma Dadci: Researcher and campaigner at Corporate Europe Observatory, working on fossil fuel industry lobbying in climate and energy policies and coordinating the Fossil Free Politics campaign. Previous work includes research and campaigning on trade policies and corporate accountability.
- Trusha Reddy: Climate and Energy Justice Researcher at WoMin: African Women Unite Against Destructive Resource Extraction. Trusha is an internationally experienced proponent of social justice with more than 15 years’ experience working both within and supporting civil society organisations in Africa and globally.
- Lewis Coenen-Rowe: Campaigner with Glasgow Calls Out Polluters (GCOP). GCOP is the Glasgow based grassroots campaign to limit influence over COP26 by big polluters. Lewis is a volunteer campaigner and activist on various fossil fuel divestment campaigns.
These presentations will be followed by questions and breakout group time to discuss, and develop strategies in response to, the contributions from our speakers.
