Event description

Description

I will be running 1-day taster sessions in copper foil stained glass. This method is ideal for creating sun-catchers, 3D boxes and Tiffany lampshades. By the end of the day you will have made a simple panel to take with you. The taster session will cover cutting glass, copper foiling, soldering and finishing of with staining the soldered seams and a polish. All tools, equipment and materials will be provided. There will be a maximum of 6 people per class.

We will be using lead solder so this course is not suitable if you are pregnant or breast-feeding.

Location

Ocean Studios, The Factory Cooperage, Royal William Yard, Plymouth PL1 3QQ

The taster session will be held in the Print Workshop which is located in the corner of the courtyard of Ocean Studios, between the gallery/shop and Nikki Taylor's studio.

Getting Here

There is the 34/34a/34b bus service from the centre of Plymouth to Royal William Yard.

There is a free carpark at Devil's Point which is about 5 minutes walk from Royal William Yard but this can get full. There are parking spaces in the courtyard but if none are available then there is alternative parking at Royal William Yard. The charges are: £2 up to 2 hours, £5 between 2-5 hours and £10 between 5-24 hours.

The parking system operating in Royal William Yard works on a ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) basis. It takes a photo of the front of your car when you enter the site and then takes a photo of your back plate when you're leaving. You can pay for your parking before you return to your car via one of the machines dotted around the Yard. Alternatively you can pay for your parking online before midnight by visiting Target's website, after leaving the Yard.

Structure of the Day

The day starts at 10 am and we will look to finish before or around 4:30 pm but this could possibly overrun to 5pm. We will take an hour for lunch but this can be a shorter break if people want to get back to making their piece. Tea, coffee and biscuits will be provided. There are places to eat at Royal William Yard but I would recommend bringing a packed lunch with you. We cannot eat in the workshops but there is the artist's "Breakout Space" with a kitchenette area with microwave and a kettle.

What to wear & what to bring

Old clothes are most suitable, or an apron or similar protective garment. Comfortable closed-toed shoes are recommended. All the necessary materials, tools and equipment will be supplied and are covered in the cost of the course. If you wear reading glasses, please bring them.

 Important Information - Please note

Stained glass is naturally a very “hands on” activity and you will be working with lead solder. There will be desktop extractor fans provided, protective gloves and goggles will also be provided when required. It is advised, however, that if you suffer with asthma or dermatitis, you seek medical advice before booking. We will be using lead solder so this course is not suitable if you are pregnant or breast-feeding.
