About this event

Co-hosted with Elly Mead, Hawkins\Brown

The design and construction of large-scale development and regeneration is a long game. Even the most inclusive and engaged design processes grapple with the knowledge that many of the people they are engaging in decision-making will have moved on before the project is completed. Our local populations are constantly shifting, whether as displaced communities, students, key workers, those moving for employment opportunities or simply those looking for pastures new. Some places have particularly transient communities, and we are often asked whether it is appropriate to engage these communities in the design journey, and if so, how to do so.

This month we are joined by Elly Mead from Hawkins\Brown Architects, who has been doing quite a lot of work and thinking in this space. A former member of The Glass-House team and experienced Chat host and participant, Elly is keen to bring this question into the Chats space and explore the question of Designing for Transient Communities with others.

Come and share your experience, questions and provocations.

About Glass-House Chats

Glass-House Chats are monthly hour-long online spaces for conversation and connection, to ask questions and explore ideas, approaches and methods, share learning and meet others.

Series 6 sees us collaborating with a range of inspiring people and organisations who will co-host sessions with us. Each guest co-host will help us bring focus, expertise and experience to conversations about different aspects of the design of places. From empathy to sustainability, we’ll unpick some of the successful ingredients of design and explore what great design can achieve.

About our Co-host

Elly is an architectural assistant and community engagement specialist currently working at Hawkins\Brown. She is passionate about the intersections between people, places and architecture. Elly previously worked at The Glass-House Community Led Design, and is experienced in working with diverse communities to create sustainable and powerful engagement strategies, resources and events.

How to Take Part

Glass-House Chats are open to anyone with an interest in the event topic. No specific experience or expertise is required to join the conversation. We believe that our Chats only benefit from a wide mix of voices, interests and experiences.

These free online events are kept intentionally small so that everyone taking part can jump in and join the conversation. Where possible, we encourage participants to keep their cameras and microphones on, to pose questions and ideas, and to share stories and links.

To create a safe space for open discussion, the Chatham House Rule is applied. Key discussion points are collated, anonymised and shared after each session.

How to Book

Glass-House Chats are free events, but places are limited, so please register only if you plan to attend.

Please note:

We will record the Chat session to help with capturing the conversation, but this recording will not be made publicly available or shared outside The Glass-House team. Following the event, we will publish a blog capturing key discussion points, but rest assured that no-one will be quoted directly, and no participants will be named. Please feel free to email us at info@theglasshouse.org.uk if you have any queries.

Organised by

The Glass-House Community Led Design is a national charity dedicated to connecting people with the design of their places, and connecting design with people. For over two decades, we have supported communities, organisations and networks to work collaboratively to shape buildings, spaces, homes and neighbourhoods.

The Glass-House sees design not only as a tool for creating great places, but also as a way to connect people and empower them with enhanced confidence, skills and a greater sense of agency. We provide hands-on support and training, share knowledge and learning, and inspire new thinking and debate through action research, events and resources.
