Artificial Intelligence and Society

5 September 2017

What are the challenges and opportunities presented by artificial intelligence? What are the possibilities for a society that is increasingly reliant on automated technologies and artificial intelligence? What are the current and future technological limitations of AI? Is there an ‘AI imaginary’ and how has literature and other art forms influenced and been influenced by it?

A catered lunch will be provided. Please advise us of any dietary requirements. Further details, including full agenda and detailed timings, will be sent to all attendees in due course.

GLOBAL CHALLENGE NETWORKING PROGRAMME 2017-18

What is it?

The Global Challenge Networking Programme (GCNP) is an opportunity for Queen’s researchers to develop interdisciplinary networks and collaborations addressing some of society’s major problems.

What are the themes?

The GCNP will address three major themes in 2017-18 – Artificial Intelligence and Society; Global Uncertainties; and Sufficiency. Each theme is open to interpretation and clarification by attendees. Some possible perspectives are outlined below; these are, however by no means exhaustive or exclusive

What happens at each event?

Each event will include an opportunity for attendees to network widely with colleagues in different disciplines, consider the main issues connected to the overarching theme through open plenary discussions, and explore new collaborations in detail in focussed groups.

The first meeting of each theme will be followed by at least one subsequent event which will allow participants to investigate new collaborations in further depth and discuss how these might be taken forward in future.

Who can attend?

All researchers at the University, regardless of career stage or disciplinary background, are welcome to attend GCNP events. The themes are broad and intended to be inclusive of all disciplines. Participants will normally be asked to provide a short synopsis of their research prior to each event.

What are the outcomes?

There are no predetermined outcomes with respect to GCNP events; possible results of the Programme’s activities could, however, include interdisciplinary funding applications or publications, impact or public engagement activity, or simply the development of new and lasting networks across disciplines.
