Aims of the Workshop

  • Build capacity towards GCRF projects at UoP and support identification of external collaborators who could work with UoP researchers

  • Enable researchers with project ideas (even if very early stage) to work with senior colleagues to discuss the ideas and plan how these may be supported and taken forward

Programme

  • 13:30 – 13:50 Review of the GCRF, the 3 GCRF strategic challenge areas and hear from colleagues that have been involved in GCRF calls

  • 13:50 – 15:00 Split into groups around the strategic areas and share project ideas with a senior colleague. Discussion will then focus on how the idea might be taken forward.

  • 15:00-15:30: Groups share summary of their discussion and actions to take forward

Follow-Up Plan

At the end of the workshop mentors will meet and share the project ideas. In the following week each colleague who came with an idea will receive a personalised set of suggestion support activities. They will also be assigned a GCRF mentor and encouraged to meet with them to draw up a plan of action.

About the Global Challenges Research Fund

In November 2015 the UK government announced the Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF). The GCRF will provide £1.5 billion of Official Development Assistance (ODA) funding between 2016-2021. The fund will contribute to realising the ambitions of the UK aid strategy and progress the global effort to address the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Specifically, the GCRF aims to significantly increase research capacity and capability in the UK and in developing countries, though excellent research with lasting impact. The ambition is to generate innovative solutions to intractable development issues and to identify practicable pathways to healthier and safer lives, sustainable development and prosperity for all, equal and effective education, social justice and human rights, and stable institutions.

Calls of various sizes emerge through-out the year and map to one of three strategic challenge areas

  • Equitable access to sustainable development

  • Sustainable economics and societies

  • Human rights, good governance and social justice
