Introduction to Global Health & Health Policy

For all the doctors and students who dream of traveling the world, practicing in exotic places; For those who feel up to the challenge of pitting themselves against the greatest emerging and established global challenges to health; For doctors who want to shape a health system that really works for patients; This course will provide an introduction to the exciting and challenging fields of global health and policy.

Whether you want to be a UK-based clinician, or your dream is to head up your own WHO Department, this course will give you a basic understanding of what it takes to engage and make an impact on global health and health policy.

The course will cover:

  • An introduction to the fields, including key concepts and the current global and political backdrop to health

  • An exploration of the scope of work in these fields and nurturing a global mindset

  • The difference between policy and politics and how to cultivate influence accordingly

  • An overview of how policy-making works in theory and how politics complicates things

  • Opportunities in these fields for clinicians, from coalface to interface

  • Opportunities in these fields beyond clinical practice: mapping career pathways

In addition to building or consolidating your knowledge base, the course will guide you through live playthrough exercises. These interactive playthroughs will allow you to put core concepts into practice and develop your own insights as individuals and groups.

Course tutor:

Dr David Neal - Non-Executive Director of Polygeia

David Neal is a doctor who is inspired by the power of motivated, intelligent people who practice medicine, to improve health in it's broadest sense. David has diverse experience in global health and health policy. He has interned at the World Health Organization, where he worked on control of Neglected Tropical Diseases, and the UK Department of Health. he was a founding member of student led global health think tank Polygeia and he has sat on the Board of Healthwatch Cambridgeshire. In the field, David has conducted research and organizational strategy work at the WHO Collaborating Centre on Zanzibar. He holds two degrees from the University of Cambridge: a first class undergraduate degree in behavioral science and biological anthropology, and his medical degree. Alongside his interest in health, David is a short story writer, writing to unwind, to reflect and to provoke discussion.
