Global March for Elephants, Rhinos and Lions - September 24th 2016.
Scots are uniting with thousands of people in over 130 cities across the globe asking the world to shun ivory, rhino horn and lion bones as commodities. Poised to be the largest demonstration of its kind, the Global March for Elephants and Rhinos (GMFER) on the 24th of September will serve as a clarion call to the member nations of CITES to vote in support of APPENDIX 1 and vote AGAINST trade on the opening day of CoP17 in Johannesburg. GMFER will also raise awareness and ask all governments to publicly destroy their stockpiles of illegal wildlife products, demonstrating zero tolerance for ALL manner of trade.
Giving their full support to this global event, Major (Retd) Ron Macgregor and local celebrity Katy Hart will be addressing the crowds in Edinburgh at about 13.00 in the Square at the bottom of the Mound. The march will start at 12.00 noon in The Meadows, continue along Middle Walk to George IV Bridge, and then down into the Mound.
“Debating the statistics is no longer relevant,” GMFER event organizers say, “it doesn’t matter which data you choose to look at, there is no denying that the planet’s loss of elephants, rhino and lions is precipitous; these keystone species are heading toward extinction.”
Painfully clear too is that the rampant demand for freshly poached elephant ivory, rhinoceros horn, and lion bones continues, particularly in Asia. This growing trade in animal body parts is a key factor in the demise of globally iconic species, and GMFER event organizers say that “killing this demand by banning domestic trade is a key part of the solution.”
The message is loud and clear and coming from all corners of the globe - at the current rate of killing and with the continued demand for ivory, horn and bones, future generations are highly unlikely to experience these magnificent animals roaming free and wild in Africa.
We are at a crossroads. GMFER organizers are encouraging member nations at CoP17, policy makers, governments and citizens to make the right decision NOW, vote for APPENDIX1 and say “NO” to trade; there is no “later” for elephants, rhinos and lions.
Ron Macgregor, Katy Hart and event organizers, Scotland for Elephants, cordially invite you to join them at the Edinburgh Global March for Elephants and Rhinos on 24th September 2016.
