Event description

Description

Global Mental Health (GMH) has the broad aim of providing universal access to mental health care through the ‘scaling up’ of services and expertise in low and middle-income countries (LMICs).

One aspect of this ‘scaling up’ has been the development of education and training in mental health to address social suffering in contexts of poverty, structural violence and humanitarian emergencies. This has involved establishing new courses in LMICs, as well as outside professionals from high income countries providing training to build capacity and develop local expertise.

The ‘scaling up’ of training raises interesting questions: Can it be assumed that mental health knowledge is universal? How does the transfer and exchange of knowledge around mental health occur? Does GMH risk positioning those in LMICs as simply recipients of knowledge generated in higher income countries? Or are there counter flows of knowledge and ideas generated in LMICs that can influence mental health thinking and practice in higher income countries?

This conference will be useful for people working in NGOs and humanitarian organisations as well for academics and mental health professionals. It will provide a space for the discussion and exchange of ideas around training and capacity building in the context of Global Mental Health and draw links between the local and global dynamics of mental health knowledge and practices and how these can be understood within an international context.

This is a FREE event open to all.

Tea, coffee and a buffet lunch will be provided.
