Global Policies for Species Conservation to Prevent Future Extinctions

Species are still declining despite global agreements to halt extinctions. The Convention on Biological Diversity, a UN treaty signed by most countries, has failed to meet a single target by 2020. In 2021, a new set of goal and targets will be agreed on.
Dr Rike Bolam will review why we have not met previous commitments, but how we have also made progress, for example by preventing some bird and mammal extinctions in recent decades. She will then talk about what is necessary to scale up these actions to achieving the Convention’s vision: to live in harmony with nature by 2050.

About the Speaker
Dr Rike Bolam is a post-doctoral scientist at the School for Natural and Environmental Sciences at Newcastle. She is interested in how to protect biodiversity whilst balancing this with the needs of people. Her work relates to global biodiversity policy, with a focus on the Convention on Biological Diversity and the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
