Please join us for a Global Witness Breakfast Briefing to find out more about our DRC Campaign and how the state lost out in an eastern Congo gold boom, while armed groups, a foreign mining company and provincial authorities pocketed millions
The Democratic Republic of Congo, at the heart of Africa, is blessed with an immense wealth of natural resources which have consistently failed to lift the overwhelming majority of its population out of desperate poverty. The country is also entering a new period of political crisis with the current President unlikely to hold elections by the end of the year as required by the constitution.
We would be delighted if you could join us for a Breakfast Briefing on Wednesday 26th October when Global Witness campaigners from our DRC team will share some of their recent work exposing corrupt actors and advocating for simple but powerful reforms to the natural resources sector. The briefing will look at the story of a Chinese gold dredging company who gave cash and arms to armed groups in the country’s east so they could access gold and how secretive sales of industrial mining assets could further undermine Congo’s fragile political system.
