Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina (1525-94) was one of the foremost composers of the Renaissance and wrote extensively for the singers of the Sistine Chapel in Rome. The Ulster Consort celebrates his 500th anniversary with a performance of one of his best-loved mass settings, appropriate for the 25 July, on the day when the church celebrates St James the Apostle. Alongside this features other music from this glorious chapel, including that of Gregorio Allegri (1582-1652), whose best-known work – Miserere mei, a setting of Psalm 51 – is normally sung in Lent but provides a moment for reflection at any point in the year.
