Event description
This is a delightful and relaxing ramble, for GlosCamSoc members and their families, children, guests and dogs.

About this Event

Gloucestershire’s own poet, Ivor Gurney loved this area. The walk starts at the Black Horse Inn, crosses the stream, rises through the magnificent nationally-important beech woods of Buckholt and Witcombe Woods, skirts the edge of High Brotheridge Iron Age Camp and Witcombe Roman Villa, climbs the famous cheese-rolling hill for one of the best views in the county, and then circles back to the pub. We might share one or two of Ivor's affectionate and thoughtful observations on it (… high on Cooper’s in June’s scented silence, / Wild strawberries grew a host there…) as we stroll together, somewhat in the manner of Clare Balding!

We shall start and finish at the Black Horse Inn, Cranham GL4 8HP where there is a (free) car park.

You can take a bite in the Black Horse beforehand, or not, as you wish. And it’s an opportunity to slake your thirst afterwards, of course.

This is an undulating circular two-and-a-half-hour's walk (apart from one short steep stretch up Cooper’s Hill), a little less than three and a half miles at a guess.

Dress code: weather-appropriate clothes and stout footwear; walking poles if wished. Cost nil. Members' friends, children, guests and dogs are all hugely welcome. Despite the nil cost, please register so we can keep tabs on numbers.
