'Net Zero Carbon' - a phrase which is becoming commonplace as more and more local authorities and companies declare a climate emergency and reach net zero by 2050 at the very latest. But what exactly does it mean? Can your business continue as normal and simply plant a few more trees? Or is more significant change required? And why is carbon such a bad thing given that it's the basis for the whole of life on Earth?

The October meeting of Gloucestershire Green Circle takes an in-depth look at the Carbon issue - one of the current environmental hot topics following the International Panel on Climate Change's (IPCC) declaration that we have just 12 years to dramatically reduce carbon dioxide emissions to avoid serious damage to human society.

The main speaker will be Craig Morey, Senior Consultant at Verco, who'll outline carbon footprinting for businesses: definitions of recent key topics such as Net Zero Carbon and Science Based Targets, and reviewing the local, national and international policies and movements driving the need for company reporting and enhanced monitoring. Craig’s expertise is in developing and delivering global-scale environmental footprint and monitoring programmes for international corporates, particular in the real estate and technology sectors.

Attendees at the meeting will leave with a basic understanding of:

  • what a carbon footprint is
  • the internal and external benefits of reporting carbon footprints
  • simple methodologies for calculating it and how to allocate business units and activities to different GHG scopes
  • how to use carbon footprint to drive performance change from within to save both carbon and costs.

9am - Welcome and introductions (all attendees have 15 secs for their elevator pitch)

9.25-10 - Coffee/tea and networking

10 - 10.30 - 'Assessing and quantifying your carbon emissions ' by Craig Morey, Senior Consultant at Verco Global

10.30 - 11.10 - Workshop: How to offset your business's carbon footprint

11.10 - 11.30 - Q & A

11.30 - End of meeting
