Description

An increasing number of schools are now supporting trans or gender questioning students and their families. Ensuring all pupils feel safe and supported to be themselves is vital for learning and there are steps that schools can take to ensure environments are supportive of pupils of all genders.

This course is for school leaders, teachers and support staff looking to improve their understanding of gender and gender identity. Participants will explore the theory and concepts which underpin trans-inclusion and how this supports a whole school approach to gender quality, including preventing transphobic and gender-based bullying. There will be a focus on terminology and developing the confidence to use key terms in the classroom. The course is practical and interactive, with opportunities to trial resources, practise techniques and learn from colleagues.

Training outcomes:

  • Knowledge of key legislation and requirements for schools, including Ofsted and the Equality Act

  • Clarity about terminology and confidence to use key terms

  • Awareness of the experiences and needs of young people, including those that are LGBT+

  • Confidence to use a range of resources to support a gender-aware approach and challenge sexism and sexual and gender-based bullying

  • Knowledge of best practice in supporting trans and gender questioning pupils

  • Clear actions for working towards a whole school approach

Supported by an eLearning short course: Gender, gender identity and trans-inclusion

Share learning with colleagues with our accompanying eLearning course. This 30-minute introductory course is free to all participants and helps to cascade learning to the staff group.

Evaluation:

All attendees must complete a short evaluation survey prior to attending the training. The link to complete the survey will be sent with your booking confirmation but don't worry! It only takes 10-15 minutes to complete.

FAQs

What's the refund policy?

Training is free to attend, but this is conditional upon attendees completing a baseline evaluation survey in advance. If it is not completed, attendance at the session will be charged. In the event that a different staff member attends on the day (e.g. due to illness), we will do our best to make provision for them to complete it before the session starts.

Why do I have to complete an evaluation before I attend?

The Learn Equality, Live Equal programme is funded by the Department for Education, who have commissioned Sheffield Hallam University (SHU) to carry out a thorough, independent evaluation of its effectiveness. The results of the evaulation will help the government, schools and the sector understand more about how schools can best tackle homophobic, biphobic and transphobic bullying. Staff attending training must complete a baseline survey before attending training and a follow-up survey approximately 3-6 months afterwards.


Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?

No

Is it ok if the name on my ticket or registration doesn't match the person who attends?

Yes, although please try to let us know in advance, as this will help us with keeping accurate records.


Will lunch and refreshments be provided?

Although teas and coffees will be available, lunch is not provided as part of this course. Please bring a packed lunch.
