The Promise and Challenges of Social Entrepreneurship
Robert H. Gertner
Joel F. Gemunder Professor of Strategy and Finance; Deputy Dean for the Part-Time MBA Programs
Join us for an evening with Professor Gertner as he presents his views on "The Promise and Challenges of Social Entrepreneurship."
Social entrepreneurs are drawing attention around the world. After addressing the challenge of defining social enterprise, Gertner will discuss the enormous potential of unleashing entrepreneurial energy and innovation to mitigate social problems. In traditional sectors, entrepreneurs drive innovation that diffuses throughout society through the growth of entrepreneurial firms and imitation. But inefficiencies in capital markets for funding social sector organizations and other institutional features limit the ability of social enterprise to drive system-wide impact. Institutional innovation will be needed to deliver on the sector's potential.
Gertner has been on the Chicago Booth faculty since 1986. His research interests include strategic decision-making, corporate finance, organization structure, theory of the firm, and social enterprises. Along with Marianne Bertrand, Gertner leads the Chicago Booth Social Entrepreneurship Initiative, which brings together researchers and their social sector interests from across Chicago Booth's academic disciplines, including economics, finance, marketing, and psychology, as well as provides educational opportunities for Booth alumni and students across a range of social sector topics.
