Event description

Description

Strines station – Brookbottom – Mellor Moor – Mellor village – Roman Lakes – Peak Forest Canal – Marple station (13km)

GRADE: MODERATE (4.5 hours inc 30 mins drinks break)

Welcome to Freshwalks and our ongoing collaboration with GM Ringway, the long-distance walking route for Greater Manchester, which we are proud to support.

Stage 6 of the GM Ringway – the first stage of the “Exhilarating East” section of the trail – constitutes an exceptionally varied route with spectacular views and gorgeous waterside sections.

Highlights of the 7.9-mile (13km) walk include:

• An ascent – steep for a brief section – to Mellor Cross, positioned high above Marple and Stockport

• A complete exploration of Mellor Moor, offering a stunning panorama of the Kinder Scout and the Dark Peak

• The pretty hilltop village of Mellor with its Grade II-listed St Thomas’ Church

• A descent to the Goyt Valley and the ‘Roman Lakes’, a Victorian beauty spot

• A final easy stroll along the Peak Forest Canal, including the remarkable flight of locks in Marple village.

Just like the previous stage of the GM Ringway, both the start and end of this walk can be accessed by train, making it easily accessible for walkers with dogs. As the walk is also fairly short, it fits in very well with the school run.

SCHEDULE

08:30 - 09:10 BREAKFAST

Feel free to join others in the group for breakfast or coffee at Carluccio’s, Manchester Piccadilly. We will then take the 09.20 train for the 28-minute journey to Strines. Train users are advised to purchase a day return to Strines, as we will be returning from Marple on the same line.

Those arriving by car are advised to park at or near Marple station and join the train to Strines at 09.44 (buying a single from Marple to Strines). Parking is also available at Strines, though you will need to make your own way back to Strines (either by train or walking along the canal).

09:50 WALK STARTS FROM STRINES RAIL STATION

Along the way, Dr Andrew Read, creator of the GM Ringway, will share some interesting facts about the history and nature of the area.

Approximately 4.5 miles (7 km) into the walk, our route passes the Devonshire Arms in Mellor. We plan to stop here for a quick drink (but not for lunch) for about 30 minutes (toilets available).

14:30 (approx.) WALK FINISHES AT MARPLE STATION. For those wishing to get back early, return trains to Manchester leave at 14.39 and 15.10 (journey time to Piccadilly approx. 25 minutes). However, if you’d like to continue socialising over a drink and meal in traditional Freshwalks style, Andrew will lead a party to the popular Norfolk Arms, virtually next door to the station at Marple Bridge. There are then further direct trains from Marple to Piccadilly every half hour throughout the afternoon and evening.
