Event description
Mental health awareness training tailored for providers of apprenticeships and other programmes in Liverpool City Region

About this Event

Background

GMLPF members report that the mental health of their apprentices and other learners is having an increasing impact on delivery of learning. Initial research undertaken by GMLPF last year with members suggested that:

  • 30% of any provider’s learners are experiencing mental health issues
  • on average 40 staff hours a month at each provider are spent dealing with learners’ mental health issues
  • there are an average of 7 incidences per provider per month of learners requiring support for mental health

In conjunction with AT Skills and Active IQ, we ran a Mental Health Awareness training course for GMLPF members in January 2019 which was extremely well received and resulted in a recognised Level 2 Award for participants.

In June, the National Lottery Community Fund awarded us a grant to continue our work around mental health in the sector. This has allowed us to funded additional research which indicates that the impact of learner mental health on delivery of programmes continues to grow. Not only that, the research suggests also that the mental health of learning provider staff is becoming a concern.

New opportunity

Thanks to the National Lottery Community Fund, we are now able to offer another opportunity for GMLPF members to attend our two day course in mental health awareness. The cost of the course is subsidised by the grant we have received and is just £130 per person for the two day course which as before, results in a recognised Level 2 Award.

The course is again delivered by AT Skills.

Purpose

The purpose of this qualification is to provide participants with an understanding and awareness of mental health, common mental health disorders and issues, help reduce stigma and discrimination, and encourage people to talk about mental health. Futhermore, the qualification will provide participants with the ability to apply their knowledge of mental health through recognising and responding to the signs of mental ill health in themselves and others and be able to offer mental health first aid to people experiencing mental ill health.

Learning outcomes

  • Understand mental health
  • Understand mental health disorders
  • Understand the support and advice available for mental ill health
  • Recognise and respond to the signs of mental ill health in yourself and others

Although the content of this course is generic, the sessions for GMLPF members will be tailored to include discussion, issues and case studies relevant to the work-based learning sector, informed by the research GMLPF has undertaken.

Cost

The cost of the course is £130. This has been significantly subsidised by the National Lottery Community Fund. This covers:

  • Awarding body registration and certification fees
  • Resources including course manual and e-learning materials
  • Tutor delivery and assessment
  • Lunch and refreshments for 2 days

Members who wish to undertake this course are asked to pay £50 deposit through Eventbrite to cover registration fees. The balance will be invoiced on completion of the course.

The course will run on 16th and 23rd October 2019

Please note: participants must attend on BOTH DAYS

Once the deposit has been paid, you will be sent a registration form and a pre-training questionnaire.
