Event description

Description

The Household Division’s Beating Retreat is a spectacular evening pageant of music and military precision drill, including horses, cannon and fireworks. These annual concerts are performed on Horse Guards Parade in front of the beautiful backdrop of St James’s Park each year on the Wednesday and Thursday evenings preceding the Queen’s Birthday Parade, “Trooping The Colour”. The theme for 2017's Beating Retreat is Military Heroes.

Military Beating Retreat concerts have a long tradition dating back to the 1690s. Originally the beating of the drum was used to order troops to break off fighting and withdraw to the safety of camp as darkness fell; later it signalled the closing of the camp gates at the end of the day, and called troops back to base for the night. Today a Beating Retreat is an evening military concert with a marching display, usually timed to mark the lowering of the Regimental flag at sunset.

The Guild Master has secured 30 reserved tickets near the front of the grandstand. Please apply as soon as possible for the event because they will only be held until the 1st November 2016. Following that date more tickets may be available but we cannot guarantee availability.

Gates are open from 6.30pm, and we must be seated by 8pm; we will therefore meet at 7pm outside the Scotland Office, a short walk from Westminster station on the Jubilee Line. The event finishes at 9.20pm, and those who would like are encouraged to join the Guild Master for a drink afterwards.
