Event description

Description

Here is an opportunity to visit five churches and a deserted village in a fascinating area of Norfolk between Fakenham and Swaffham, led by two expert guides. The destinations for this day school feature three churches still in use and two ruined, one of which is surrounded by possibly the best accessible Deserted Medieval Village earthworks in Norfolk.

The itinerary features 'the church that isn't a church' and another evocative ruin, plus an estate church with Townshend memorials, a church with an incredible rood screen dado, and a beautiful rural church with what's said to be the oldest altar mensa in East Anglia.

These magnificent buildings should provide stimulating conversation among attendees and the course leaders. The day is particularly aimed at those who would like to improve their knowledge of Norfolk's churches. During the day school you will also discover how the use of churches changed over time and the importance of patronage to the way churches looked, factors leading to village depopulation, and the church in relation to its village and wider landscape.

AGENDA:

Packed lunch if you would prefer not to have a pub lunch (please let us know as we will need to give numbers and menu choices to the pub), waterproofs / umbrella, a flask of tea or coffee for later in the day (if you wish), stout footwear, pen and paper, plus lots of enthusiasm and a camera!

IMPORTANT NOTES:

This day school may involve the need to car share and we would appreciate your co-operation in minimising the amout of traffic at each site. The churches we will be visiting are all no more than a few minutes' drive from each other.

There will be a small amount of walking involved to access each church. Churchyards, and the interior and exterior of church ruins, by their very nature are not flat. Please take special care when walking through these areas as the organisers cannot accept any liability for trips, slips and other personal injuries.

In the event of bad weather, as the ruins at Godwick All Saints and West Raynham St Margaret are exposed to the element these parts of the visit will be replaced by a discussions about Deserted Medieval Villages, church ruins, and these two churches in particular.

Due to costs, we will not be able to run the event with less than 10 participants. So, please get sharing on Facebook and Twitter!

£2.50 of the cost of each single ticket will be donated to the still active churches.
