Cultureword’s National Black Writers Conference 2021 presents: 'Going Digital: Exploring Future Literature'
About this event
Writers and artists have more choice of how to present their work today than ever before – and digital expands those choices exponentially.
But the question for us is, how do we make those choices? With so many possibilities, how do we begin? The digital future promises endless vistas; how do we find out which tools will unlock our imaginations?
Going Digital will try to answer a few of those questions, with Beth Senior, Senior Lecturer at Manchester Metropolitan University’s School of Digital Art [SODA] and author and creative writing mentor Mickela Sonola.
Plus, we’ll be presenting the three winners of our Going Digital competition – three answers to how to create compelling, must-see digital work, pointing three new ways into the future.

Beth Senior is the Programme Lead for the Foundation Year and Academic Lead for Outreach and Equality, Diversity and Inclusion at Manchester Metropolitan University’s new School of Digital Arts (SODA). As Outreach Lead and EDI Co-ordinator, Beth supports the team in developing their recruitment and increasing the widening participation from diverse communities onto degree programmes, engaging young people both locally and further afield.Originally training as a three-dimensional designer, Beth has over 20 years’ experience of teaching games and creative digital media. With an MA in Animation, she has presented at educational conferences and had her work included in a documentary looking at British Women in Animation.
Beth’s design background has always informed her choices and she has embraced new technology throughout her career. Her practice has explored the concept of being a dual professional, looking at how creative practitioners can maintain their creative practice whilst working in education. She is passionate about widening participation in the arts and decolonising the curriculum in art subjects, looking at how it can be embedded into non-traditional discourse spaces and how our creative practice can be used to illustrate culture and drive positive societal change.
As Programme Lead for SODA’s Foundation Year Beth leads on the continuing development of the Foundation Year and contributes to the development and delivery of the BA Game Art for SODA.
