The London Materials Society looks forward to hosting Dr Christopher Corti, Technology Consultant at COReGOLD on Thursday 1st December at IOM3. Dr Corti will share in the magic of the festive season in a talk that traverses the multi-faceted and oft-times indulgent expedition that is the story of gold. This is sure to be a fascinating event that appeals to those with an interest in metallurgy, mining, jewellery and design as well as the novel use of gold in medicine and industry.
Dr. Christopher Corti has been involved in the science and applications of gold for over 37 years. The talk encompasses many facets of this unique and fascinating metal from the ancient past through the present to the future. Gold serves both as a store of monetary value and as a decorative material. It also serves as an industrial and medical metal and is essential to many facets of our modern lives.
Gold was one of the first metals discovered and used by man and has been highly prized through the millennia for its beauty and value. It is one of only two coloured metals. We are familiar with its use for jewellery and other decorative applications and coinage throughout history, for example.
Today, gold jewellery is used for adornment in all corners of the world and represents its main use. We explore its use in jewellery from caratage preferences, to innovative design and colour possibilities, to hallmarking and manufacture. Gold also plays a significant role in central banks as a reserve asset, as a very personal liquid monetary asset in many parts of this troubled world and in diverse applications from the decoration of tableware to electronic circuitry, dentistry and anti-arthritic treatments. Exploration into where gold is found and mined, and where it is used will also be conducted.
Whilst gold jewellery will continue to dominate gold consumption in the future, there are many interesting breakthroughs in gold science and technology that could see its wider application in industry for pollution control, clean energy generation and anti-cancer drugs. It is a green metal for the 21st century.
The talk is well illustrated with examples of its use over the ages. Inevitably, there are some technical aspects, but it will not be boring!
With over 25 years experience in the precious metals industry, Dr. Chris Corti now consults at the highest level at the World Gold Council concerning technology. In his role, he has over 10 years experience responding to a wide ranging audience of jewellers and industrialists to provide technical support. Currently, he is the lead at COReGOLD Technology Consultancy and also consults for the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths. We are blessed to be welcoming an active member at the IOM3, having served on the council. Further, Dr. Corti has also served as editor of jewellery technology magazine 'Gold Technology' and the highly cited e-journal 'Gold Bulletin', as well as having over 100 publicaitons to his name.
