Therapists with some experience in working with interpreters.
Course Overview
Once asylum seekers and refugees have overcome the myriad obstacles to accessing services, the role of the interpreter, and how you as a professional hold that relationship are vital to the experience of your clients, particularly in psychological therapy.
Aim and objectives:
- Explore good practice in working with interpreters in psychological therapy
- Gain an enhanced understanding of the role of the interpreter
- Explore the impact of therapeutic narratives on the interpreter and the importance of briefing and debriefing
- Examine common challenges that can occur in the triad and explore ways of managing these as they arise in therapy
- Explore shifting power dynamics in the triad and understand ways of managing these
- Ending the three way relationship
Course format
Zoom online workshop: 4 hours. The training will be a mixture of experiential small group exercises and teaching.
Participants won't need a Zoom account to join the training. An email containing the link to join our online event page will be sent prior to the training.

- A pen and paper
- A working microphone and camera (built-in in most laptops and smartphones)

Special rate tickets for members of Refugee Community Organisations (RCOs) are available. Please contact the Refugee Council at training@refugeecouncil.org.uk to enquire RCO about eligibility.

- To qualify for certification you should have your camera on and/or participate fully in the training
- If you arrive more than half an hour late you may be refused admission
- If you need to leave the training for a work emergency, you may not be re-admitted
