About this event

  • 42 days 3 hours

This course offers students the opportunity to explore some of the diverse applications of Gouache. Gouache is an opaque water-based paint that is both bold, vibrant, subtle and delicate. Taking inspiration from the landscapes of Studio Ghibli to the rich designs of Kaffe Fassett, students will work from reference images and still life to design and produce a range of artworks focusing on colour, tone, and pattern. Together we will look at composition, colour mixing, application and layering. This course aims to give a good foundation in the subject, to cater to individual strengths and to enrich student portfolios. Throughout the sessions students will be encouraged to talk about their work and share points of reference and inspiration.

Most materials including gouache paint, brushes, paper and drawing pencils are provided but students are welcome to bring their own brushes if preferred.

This course is suitable for all levels.

About the courses at Phoenix Art Space

Phoenix Art Space's courses provide a mix of high quality workshops aimed at practicing, and aspiring artists and art lovers. They are suitable for anyone (including beginners unless otherwise stated) who wants to learn new skills from professional artists and would like to meet likeminded people in a supportive and creative environment. We normally provide all the basic materials unless stated in the course descriptions. You need to sign up in advance as some popular courses fill up very quickly.

All courses are aimed at adults (over 18) unless otherwise stated. Course fees are kept as low as possible to encourage everyone to participate in the arts, including those on low incomes but not eligible for benefits, such as many artists. Therefore we do not offer separate concessionary rates for members of the public. We are unable to offer discounted rates for other reasons, for instance if you are unable to attend all the sessions, unless the course has already started and has unfilled spaces.

We accept payments online by credit or debit card and PayPal. Offline payment options are only available when booking a ticket in person at the Phoenix Art Space front desk during gallery opening hours.

We regret we are unable to provide car or bicycle parking facilities (except for students with disabilities).

If you have any additional needs please let us know and we will endeavour to accommodate them. We have disabled access on the ground floor where the courses are held, including a ramp and toilet facilities. Please email chloe@phoenixbrighton.org for information.

Booking Terms and Conditions:

Refunds require 2 weeks notice prior to the start of the course and will involve the deduction of our costs such as transaction fees or bank charges. If less than less than 2 weeks notice is given prior to the course start date we regret that refunds or transfers to other courses are NOT possible.

Courses are aimed at over 18s.

If a course is cancelled we will endeavour to give as much notice as possible by sending participants an email. It is rare for us to cancel courses but it occasionally happens due to events beyond our control, in that case we refund the payment in full.

Please ensure you check your email before a class starts as we or the tutor may be in touch with instructions/advice.
