Event description

Description

Gower Street Presents is strand of events dedicated to championing the most exciting new literary fiction. Expect off-beat, original and innovative writing.

Join us on January 16th for an evening with Leila Slimani – the first Moroccan woman to win France’s most prestigious literary accolade, the Prix Goncourt – as she speaks to guest chair Sam Baker about her first novel to be translated into English, Lullaby.

'A taut and exquisitely written novel that will keep you up all night desperately turning the pages. This book is insanely good’ Kate Hamer, author of The Girl in the Red Coat and The Doll Funeral

Lullaby is story of a middle-class couple who employ the seemingly perfect nanny, only to come home one day and find she has murdered both of their children. A compulsive, riveting and bravely observed exploration of power, class, race, domesticity and motherhood.

Leila Slimani is the author of three books. Her first novel, The Ogre’s Garden – forthcoming from Faber in 2019 – won the Prix La Mamounia. She is also the author of Sex and Lies, a non-fiction book about the sexual desires of Moroccan women, which became a literary sensation in France upon publication. She is a journalist and frequent commentator on women’s and human rights and lives, and was made Emmanuel Macron’s Francophone affairs minister in November 2017.
