An immersive GPS walking performance for 6 people at a time, guided by a site-specific soundtrack

About this event

Date: Saturday 24th of July

Time: 10:30, 1:30, 3:30

Location: Riverside Valley Park

Information:

You don’t need to be able to sew, just to identify as female or non-binary, and have a sense of curiosity and play. Walking backwards, forwards and round in circles, together we will embellish the landscape in a choreography of stitches which will be invisible to anybody watching until they are shared online afterwards.

We have been working outdoors with groups across Exeter, making connections between each place, its biodiversity, and ourselves. Expect to hear local voices and sounds floating downriver. Expect a confluence of the faraway and the ground beneath your feet. Expect to be socially distant and physically present in new and unexpected ways.

GPS embroidery turns traditional location for women’s artmaking inside out, using simple tracking techniques to explore our everyday environment, and making human and nonhuman networks of care and repair visible for all to see.

Venues and directions:

We will meet at the car park next to Salmonpool Swing Bridge. Please arrive 15 minutes before your performance time.

From the city centre you can cycle or walk along the Exe in the direction of Riverside Valley Park/Double Locks. When you get to Riverside Valley Park, the car park is on your right.

From Marsh Barton, walk over the Clapper Brook Lane East bridge to arrive directly at the car park.

From Salmon Pool Lane you can walk through Duckes Meadow and over the bridge, keeping Riverside Valley Park on your left. The car park is directly in front of you.

If the event is fully booked and you are curious, feel free to come and observe the performances at any time without registering, but please note any social distancing restrictions that may still be in place.

This workshop requires participants to move across uneven ground, so we regret it may not be suitable for those with limited mobility.

The grass is long in some places in the park. We won’t be walking in areas with thistles and nettles but you may choose to wear long trousers.
