Graduate School Update Day 2016

Convened by Ian Livingstone and David Watson

Graduate School Update Day is an annual event open to research degree students and supervisors.

9:00: Arrival and Refreshments

9:30-10:30: Graduate School Update

This session will provide an update on recent developments in the Graduate School. It will include an introduction for research students and their supervisors to 'Gateway', our new online management system.

10:30-13:00: Research Integrity: What is it and why do I need to know about it? Dr. Andrew C. Rawnsley.

This session will introduce you to research integrity, what it is and how it differs from, but relates to, ethical review of research. Research integrity is a critical part of every academic’s work and this session will give you the opportunity to learn about and discuss its relevance to your discipline area; how it plays a part in your academic life, whether as a student, supervisor, or researcher; and how it is currently being manifested by key organisations including funders, HE policy bodies, and advisory bodies such as the UK Research Integrity Office and the Association for Research Ethics. The session will give an overview of the context of research integrity in the UK; provide information, sources of guidance and advice; tackle important areas such as data, authorship and publication; and explore examples and case materials illustrating the major topics and issues through discussion. It is suitable for all academic staff, support staff involved with the administration of research, postgraduate and research students and post-doctoral researchers of any discipline.
