Event description
It may be a little later than planned but you still deserve to celebrate surrounded by your friends and family.

About this event

We know how important it is to graduate surrounded by your friends and family. It may be a little later than planned, but you still deserve to celebrate your achievements! Join us for a Graduation Garden Party with drinks, entertainment, and photo opportunities to reconnect with friends and academics and bid farewell to campus.

The events will take place from 6 – 9 September in University Square, Coventry:

  • Monday 6 September: Faculty of Business and Law
  • Tuesday 7 September: Faculty of Health and Life Sciences
  • Wednesday 8 September: Faculty of Engineering and Environment and Computing and Postgraduate Researchers
  • Thursday 9 September: Faculty of Arts and Humanities, Coventry University London, CU Coventry and CU London

If you can’t make the specific date for your faculty, don’t worry! You can book to attend any of the events throughout the week.

Tickets are free and include a drink and snack on arrival. You can bring up to two guests, but please register a ticket per person, so three tickets maximum per graduate.

Graduation gowns and mortarboards are available to hire at an additional cost so you can get that graduation shot you always dreamed of! There are two options for this depending on the gown you'd like:

1. Ede and Ravenscroft

Traditional University Academic Dress, including hoods, can be hired via Ede and Ravenscroft. Orders need to be placed by 26th August. The cost for Bachelors level is £45, Masters level is £51 and PhD is £58, which includes postage and returns costs.

2. Churchill Gowns

Plain black gowns and mortarboards can be hired via Churchill Gowns for £30. These do not come in the Coventry University colours and do not include hoods.

Please note, these events are for students whose graduation was held online between April 2020 and April 2021. They are not for students who completed their course in 2021 who will graduate later this year as planned.

We’re looking forward to celebrating with you soon!

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the latest I can register?

You can book tickets until 5pm on Friday 3rd August. However, please note, some time slots may become fully booked before then so we'd advise you to register as soon as possible.

Are we only able to book an hour slot to attend the celebration?

No, the time slot that you book only indicates the time you will arrive. You are more than welcome to stay until the event finishes at 6pm.

Will there be professional photography?

Yes, we will have studio setups in Square One, where professional photographers will take 2-3 photos of you in your cap and gown holding the degree scroll (provided). These photos will be available to view instantly and can be ordered and printed there and then or viewed and ordered online in a variety of sizes and packages. Instant prints will be 6x8” and will start from £8.99 per print.

We will also have an Epic Photo Booth so that you can capture more fun and informal photos with your family, friends and classmates. All images will be uploaded to an online gallery where you can download them for free and there will be unlimited prints on the day too.

Can we attend a normal graduation ceremony at the Cathedral?

Due to Government COVID-19 restrictions, virtual graduations replaced in-person ceremonies last year. Coventry University graduates more than 11,000 students a year, across 30 events. As each event involves at least 100 members of staff and a number of external partners, unfortunately, logistically we are not able to run these events to cover the in-person ceremonies that could not take place last year.

However, we are committed to providing an opportunity to celebrate in-person together, which is why we have organised these events for you. You will be able to celebrate your achievements with your guests, University friends and lecturers, wear a gown and have photographs taken with your fellow graduates and colleagues in ceremonial dress. We really hope you will join us at this free event.

Will my name be called out and will there be an opportunity to go on stage?

The formal part of your graduation ceremony has already officially been completed ‘in absentia’ so cannot be repeated. This event provides a wider experience of all the fun things you will have missed from an ordinary Graduation Ceremony.

Am I able to defer my attendance until the November graduation ceremony?

Unfortunately, we are not able to allow students to defer their graduation celebrations or ceremonies. These events are large scale undertakings involving thousands of students, guests, and staff and as such we do not have the capacity for students to defer their ceremony.

Will the event involve the cathedral?

Unfortunately, we can’t offer the usual Graduation Ceremony in the Cathedral as you have officially graduated ‘in absentia’. We are instead installing a significant event space in University Square and Starley Gardens for this Garden Party-style event where you'll be able to celebrate throughout the day and get loads of graduation photos.

Why have we not been sent an email invitation for this event?

Due to GDPR rules we have not been able to email all students who have ‘left’ the University on their personal email addresses. If you still access your university email address, you may have heard from us. However, we're mainly relying on social media and other channels to help spread the word. If you can share with your networks, post on social media and tell your fellow graduates, we would greatly appreciate it!
