Join Michelle Maiden, as she reads her new book "Grandpa Kuma" for children aged 3 to 6 years old, followed by an origami bear and colouring activity.
Grandpa Kuma has travelled all the way from Japan to see his granddaughter, Miko, and she is very excited. They both have lots they want to say to each other but they don’t speak the same language. So, will it be possible to play and have fun together before Grandpa Kuma flies home? A gentle look at language and the barriers it can create.
Grandpa Kuma is based on Michelle’s own experiences growing up as a mixed-race child. Her Japanese grandfather (ojiichan) used to visit her in New York City most summers. Michelle wasn’t fluent in Japanese but could manage a few words and phrases. Together with her ojiichan she had to find other ways of communicating and connected through the games and activities pictured in the story.
Michelle Maiden is a Japanese-American author-illustrator from New York, living in Guildford. Grandpa Kuma is her first picture book.
Copies of Michelle's Books will be on sale after the session, for £8.99, which the author is happy to sign, card or cash payment. Book also gives a free audio recording via a QR code.
