This year, the Grantham Centre Annual Symposium will again be a hybrid event. It will take place in person at Firth Hall, Firth Court, on Wednesday 11th October 2023. If you can’t attend in person then you’ll be able to watch the symposium online on Blackboard and you’ll have the option to ask questions remotely as well.

The Symposium showcases multidisciplinary sustainability research across the University of Sheffield. A range of speakers will talk about their research and discuss climate change adaptation.

There will be sessions on the following topics:

‘The impact of climate change on migration’
‘Flooding: Strategies for developing resilience’
‘Ensuring food security for the future’

There will also be a panel discussion on ‘Loss & Damage: Who pays, how should it be funded and how do we improve outcomes?’. We will also hear from the winner of last year's Double Hundred Challenge. The full programme of the event is available here.

PhD students starting their PhD in autumn 2023 will also have an opportunity to talk to current Grantham PhD students (‘Grantham Scholars’) about our training programme where you can receive an additional three months of funding and time if you take part in our unique training programme.

Who can come?

The event is free and open to the University of Sheffield students and staff and invited external people only. Please do not forward to external colleagues outside of Sheffield University.

Hybrid event

When you register for the event here on Eventbrite, you will need to indicate whether you’re planning to attend in person or online by answering questions in the registration form. Please note that the deadline to register for this event is midday on Friday 29th September - after that the Eventbrite registration will close.

If you opt to attend online, you’ll be able to listen to all the talks and ask questions via an online app. However please note that all the speakers at the Symposium will be present in person and any networking activities will also only take place in person at Firth Hall, Firth Court.

After you register

If you want to attend the Symposium in person, you will need to indicate any dietary requirements when filling out the registration form, and come to Firth Hall, Firth Court on the day of the event at 8:30am for registration where you will receive your name badge.

If you want to attend the Symposium online, you will be sent a Blackboard link after you register. You will receive further instructions on how to remotely ask questions closer to the date.

Please note: The panel discussion and the presentations in all the other sessions will be recorded. By signing up for the event, you agree to this.

Sustainable refreshments

There will be refreshments provided for the in-person attendees throughout the day. At the Grantham Centre we are dedicated to making our events as sustainable as possible, therefore we're working with our suppliers to use food with a low carbon footprint whenever we can. All food served at the Symposium will be vegetarian and vegan - this means that you don’t have to indicate these as dietary requirements when you’re registering for the event.

The milk served with tea and coffee is delivered by local Sheffield company Our Cow Molly and any eggs used in making the food are British Lion eggs. There will be more information provided about the food sources on the day of the Symposium as we know that transparency about food choices is important to attendees of any sustainability related event. All food at the Symposium will be served on crockery and please rest assured that any plastic trays or cups will be washed and reused.

Regarding food waste, any food waste left at a University of Sheffield event goes to the Save our Sandwiches team for redistribution to local charities, or it’s collected and placed in community fridges based at the residences for student and local community consumption. Anything unfit for human consumption is collected by Refood and composted.
