Join us for a fascinating day of talks at the Avalon Marshes Centre exploring the world of grasshoppers and crickets. Whether you’re new to insects or looking to sharpen your ID skills, you’re welcome to attend one or both sessions.

Session 1

Little Jumpers: An Introduction to Grasshoppers and Crickets

10:30 – 11:30

A light and engaging introduction to the behaviour, ecology, and variety of grasshoppers and crickets. Perfect for beginners or those simply curious about these remarkable insects.

Session 2

Identification of Grasshoppers & Crickets

12:00 – 13:00

A more in-depth session for those wanting to learn how to identify grasshoppers and crickets to species level. We’ll focus on the species most likely to be found in Somerset.

About the Speaker

Both sessions will be led by Fred Giles of the Recorders of Avalon Marshes volunteer group. RoAM exists to record the wildlife of the Somerset Wetlands and the wider area, particularly focusing on rare flora, fauna and fungi. Volunteers also record relevant environmental factors such as weather conditions and water quality.

Organized by

The Avalon Marshes, a magical wetland landscape, lies at the heart of the Somerset Levels and Moors. Managed by Natural England and partners, it is nationally important for its rich cultural heritage and diversity of wildlife, with Glastonbury Tor, the Isle of Avalon and some of Britain’s best wetland nature reserves.
