Gravesend and Tilbury - A Walk in Kent and Essex
Sat, July 8, 2017, 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM BST
This is the eighth in a series of walks along the Thames from London to the sea.
This is a walk in two parts, connected by a trip across the Thames on the Tilbury Gravesend ferry.
The walk starts in historic Gravesend, in the 19th Century a popular day trip destination for Londoners. On the walk we will look at some of the historic buildings in the town, including Milton Chantry, a 14th century hospital, the fort and the esplanade. There Rob will tell stories of the tea gardens that kept visiting Londoners amused. We will then take a look at the graveyard where Pocahontas is buried before taking the ferry over to Essex.
On the other side of the river is Tilbury, home to the famous container port, but also the place where Elizabeth I addressed her troops as fears grew of the invading Spanish Armada. The walk finishes at Tilbury Town where you can catch a train back to London.
The walk is about four miles in total. The cost of the Ferry is £4 - not included in the price of the walk
