Join us for a fascinating talk with David Patient, author of Tilt Boats & Hatch Boats of Gravesend & The London River 1555–1865.

David has extensively studied the maritime history of Gravesend during the ‘Days of Sail’, focusing on two iconic vessels of the River Thames:

  • Tilt Boats – Passenger vessels that served the Long Ferry route between Gravesend and Billingsgate from the mid-16th century, powered by oar and sail.
  • Hatch Boats – Swift sailing craft that transported fresh fish from Gravesend to Billingsgate Fish Market from the late 18th century.

This engaging talk will explore the development and operation of these boats, while also shedding light on the rich history of ship, smack, and yacht building in Gravesend.
