The breakthrough discovery of gravitational waves from colliding black holes and neutron stars in distant galaxies have opened a new window to the universe. Gravitational waves help us explore events we are unlikely to ever see with our eyes, like merging black holes, and provide a very different perspective of explosive events we do see, like gamma-ray bursts. It is an exciting emerging research area with enormous future discovery potential.

The area of gravitational-wave astronomy is described in a new research monograph written by Professor Nils Andersson in Mathematical Sciences, published by Oxford University Press at the end of November 2019. We will celebrate the publication by holding an informal event on Friday 24 January from 4-6pm.
