The inscription on the school’s First World War memorial board reads ‘They died for great ideals’. Great ideals inspired those who fought in the War and those whose conscience did not allow them to fight. Great ideals, deeply rooted in the Quaker values of the school, were surely also motivating the staff and the pupils as they did their best to live honourably and diligently at Leighton Park in the wartime years.
School Archivist John Allinson, along with Old Leightonian Charlotte Smith (Head Girl 2012-2103) have written this fascinating work, describing the role of Old Leightonians in the Great War, and highlighting the particular dilemma from those in a Quaker School. Research in the boys' pupil files has enabled the writers to draw a poignant profile of lives cut too short.
