This year, World Cancer Day takes place on Thursday 4th February 2021. The global theme this year is #IAmAndIWill, encouraging us to think about our own commitments to improving cancer outcomes.
The team at Greater Manchester Cancer will be marking this important day with a range of activities, from live online events to activities on social media.
Suitable for Healthcare Professionals, Service Users and the General Public of Greater Manchester and East Cheshire.
Key themes of the day include:
• Challenges and opportunities presented by COVID (relating to cancer)
• Health inequalities
• Resilience in challenging times
• Joint collaboration across Greater Manchester (clinical delivery, research, patient involvement)
• Recognition of our staff and patients, recognising their commitments and challenges from the past 12 months and making further commitments to cancer services in the coming year

09.30 - 10.45 Cancer and COVID: How is Greater Manchester responding?
This session will explore the local and national position on cancer, exploring both the challenges and opportunities brought about by covid across both clinical delivery and research services. It will consider the role of the Cancer Surgical Hub and the impact on health inequalities.
The audience has been invited to pre-submit questions for this session.

11.45 – 12.15 Tony Walsh Poetry Reveal: ‘Innit, love?’
This session will reveal a poem commissioned by Manchester poet Tony Walsh, to recognise the efforts of healthcare staff and researchers to provide the best care and outcomes in Greater Manchester, and reassures the public that we still want them to come to us if they have symptoms or require treatment. A group of patients, doctors, researchers and managers from across Greater Manchester were involved in a creative workshop with Tony at the start of this process.

12.30 – 13.30 Resilience in Challenging Times: Richard McCann
This session is a general session suitable for both staff and the public. Richard McCann, from the ‘iCan Academy’ will share a blend of his own experiences of overcoming challenges, mixed with techniques and strategies for coping in difficult and changing situations.
13.30 – 13.40 Summary and Close
A round-up of the day’s events and key messages and a look forward to Virtual Cancer Week on 24-28 May 2021.
