Greater Manchester housing co-operatives: past, present and future

Thursday 26th April at Holyoake House, Hanover St, Manchester M60 0AS

Hot food and refreshments will be provided

Housing Futures is organising a series of thematic events on community-led housing. We want to build a network of people, groups and organisations in Greater Manchester who are interested in working together to co-create knowledge and develop strategies to promote community-led models in the city-region.

You are warmly invited to join us for the first in our series of evening events:

Greater Manchester Housing Co-operatives: Past, Present and Future

PLEASE NOTE THAT EVENT REGISTRATION DOES NOT NECESSARILY GUARANTEE A PLACE - WE WILL CONTACT YOU AS SOON AS POSSIBLE AND BEFORE APRIL 23RD TO CONFIRM YOUR BOOKING*

We will look at the history of housing co-ops in Manchester and surrounding areas; at what co-ops today have to offer; and how we can tackle the some of the challenges we face.

Over an evening meal, you will be part of a facilitated conversation with other current and former residents of housing co-ops, across the spectrum of sizes and structures. Expect to meet half-remembered figures from the past, and tenants of thriving projects you’ve never heard of!

Come and share your knowledge, experience, cynicism or enthusiasm and hear from others about what works and what doesn’t in the setting up and running of co-operatively run communities.

  • To what extent have housing co-ops offered an alternative way of life in Greater Manchester (social, economic, political, ecological) over the last half-century or more?
  • What other value can co-ops bring to low-income or inner-city communities?
  • Why do some co-ops sustain over time while others close down?
  • Within the GM context, what are the significant drivers and constraints shaping the establishment of new or the expansion of existing housing co-operatives?

There are many different groups and initiative across the region doing great things. As well as informing our research, we want this event to strengthen the existing networks and build a powerful base for promoting co-operative housing, taking advantage of growing local and national interest in housing ‘alternatives’.

The event will take place as follows:

Date:   Thursday 26th April 2018

Time:   6.00 – 8.30pm

Venue: Holyoake House, Hanover St, Manchester M60 0AS

Please get in touch if you might be prevented from attending by factors such as travel costs - we have a limited budget to help out where we can. We’ll be putting on hot food and refreshments for the evening to make sure that everyone is well-fed and watered.

Please register for a place by Friday 20th April

*We may need to restrict places to ensure a balance of contributors.
