“Green Corridors 101; what makes a good candidate route and how do we make them work?” by Camilo Perico, UMAS , to be held at RINA HQ, 8-9 Northumberland Street, London, WC2N 5DA at 17:30 for 18:00 hours (duration approximately 1 hour).

Green Corridors (GCs) have emerged as a critical concept in the race to decarbonize the maritime industry, aligned with a 1.5°C scenario under the Paris Agreement. In this presentation, we will delve into the intricacies of GCs, examining them from various perspectives and shedding light on the challenges and opportunities they present.

The presentation will begin by defining what Green Corridors are, exploring their significance from a long-term infrastructure standpoint, a pilot project and R&D perspective, their impact on greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) from a well-to-wheel (WTW) viewpoint, and their role within the global regulatory framework, especially within the International Maritime Organization (IMO). This discussion essentially frames GCs as a unique opportunity to coordinate efforts to challenge the cost gap between fossil and alternative fuels, while deploying the long-term infrastructure and technology advancements required for a sustainable transition. We will then dive into the process of setting up Green Corridors, discussing the critical roles of stakeholders and opportunities in driving their establishment. While many Green Corridor initiatives have been stakeholder-driven, we'll explore the common roadblocks they face, including navigating competing interests and discussions.

One of the key challenges lies in materializing opportunities and deciding on the level of commitment required. We will discuss the actions necessary to overcome these hurdles and create a coordinated front that estimates the level of institutional support required.

Throughout the presentation, we'll explore alternative avenues for funding and support, including institutional funding, and opportunity matching, such as the US Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IRA) and EU regulations, as well as private risk investments, all within a four-year horizon.

In addition, we will touch upon upcoming developments that hold the potential to unblock these initiatives, such as GHG regulatory changes, fuel standards, and Market-Based Measures (MBM)
