Description

Green Infrastructure - Past, Present and Future

One-day symposium supported by the University of Manchester/University of Toronto and Manchester Urban Institute.

Green Infrastructure planning has come a long way in twenty years from something nice to have within development so a mainstay of investment discussions in our urban areas. However, its trajectory and use has been variable across the UK, and internationally. Taking stock of what we mean by Green Infrastructure, how we use it, what benefits it delivers, and who pays for it is vital to our ongoing understanding of the added value that it can deliver.

This one-day symposium brings together leaders in Green Infrastructure, urban and community forestry, and landscape and urban planning to discuss the road we've travelled in supporting Green Infrastructure. It will ask where are we going, have we got it right, and what do we need to do to ensure Green Infrastructure continues to be a fundamental element of all development debates.

Speakers:

Tenley Conway (University of Toronto), Maggie Roe, (University of Newcastle), Clive Davies (University of Newcastle/MD2 Consultants), and Krista Patrick (Greater Manchester Combined Authority) and others will discuss how the terminology we use influences policy and practice, and debate how we embed Green Infrastructure, Natural Capital thinking, and an appreciation of trees and urban nature into our daily lives.

The event will be structured as a series of provocations asking what Green Infrastructure can do for us from the keynote speakers. These will be supported by additional speakers from across the academic and environment sector who will reflect on their understandings of Green Infrastructure in theory and practice. The symposium will conclude with a panel discussion.

Who should attend:

The event is aimed at all those interested in our understanding of planning, landscape, environment and Green Infrastructure. It will draw on over twenty years of experience working in this field from the event's speakers who have helped to shape the ways in which we consider Green Infrastructure and urban forestry in the UK and internationally. By bringing together speakers with strong links to policy and practice the symposium will debate the changes we have seen in planning and discuss where we might go next.

The event will be of interest to Local Authority planners working with environmental issues, planning and landscape consultants, the environment sector, students and academics working with issues of Green Infrastructure, development, nature, community development and urban/community forestry.

Registration:

The event is open to all but registration is essential.
