Event description

Description

The Hawick Community Energy Group in partnership with Creative Carbon Scotland and Alchemy Film and Arts is delighted to be hosting the first Green Tease in the Scottish Borders.

Rivalry - from rivalis, a person that dwells on the opposite river bank - has defined and shaped much of the cultural heritage of the Tweed Catchment – rivalry between families, between towns and across borders.

Hawick, Galashiels, Jedburgh, Selkirk and Eyemouth are all Scottish Borders towns in the midst of regeneration projects.

In Hawick for example, the Hawick Flood Protection Scheme is bringing a focus to the town’s relationship to the River Teviot and its tributaries and a separate £3.6m regeneration initiative for the town is underway.

Taken together these projects create a real opportunity for the Scottish Borders to transition to a more sustainable future. There is a huge amount of knowledge, great ideas and enterprise in the region that can make this happen if we can cultivate a culture of working together.

When so much of the local cultural heritage is shaped through the narratives of rivalry and reivers how might this culture shift happen? Can arts practice play a role in shaping this transition to a more sustainable future and what might that look like?

The afternoon will be framed by brief introductions to Creative Carbon Scotland’s culture/SHIFT research project and to Adaptation Scotland’s Theory of Change. A series of 5 minute presentations showcasing projects and ideas that are bringing people together from around the region will be followed by open discussion and a group workshop.

The kind of questions we will be looking to discuss are:

What are the opportunities for change locally?

Can we identify strategies that help shift cultures?

What do we need to make these changes possible?

The aim is to develop new connections between individuals, organisations and initiatives in the region and some achievable action points by the end of the session that will facilitate future action. This event is open to all and welcomes a broad range of perspectives to contribute to and shape the discussion.

Tea, coffee and biscuits will be provided.

Further information about Green Tease, event accessbility and travel is available via the CCS website.
