Description

Councillor Denise Hyland would like to invite you to join us for lunch at the Greenwich Healthy Business Network Event on Thursday 21st February 2019, 12:00pm - 2pm. We will look at the link between mental health and substance abuse and provide information and signposting to practical advice and support within the borough that can help you deal with these issues in your workplace.

The Greenwich Healthy Business Network supports the Healthy Workplace Charter ambition for the borough to be known as a great place to live and work.

Councillor Denise Hyland chairs the event and welcomes presentations from Bridge Mental Health, CGL Basis and Public Health's Alcohol Strategy Lead. The event will be supported by the Chamber of Commerce. There will also be a number of stands providing information on free health related training and support for your workplace:

  • Understanding Health Improvement training

  • Make Every Opportunity Count (MEOC) e-learning

  • Sugar Smart Greenwich

  • Cycle training

  • The Healthy Workplace Charter

  • Support with cutting back on alcohol

  • Mental health and substance misuse

Please note, registration, lunch and networking will take place from 12:00pm. Presentations will commence at 12.30pm.

Why is mental health and substance misuse relevant to employers?

Poor mental health is one of the biggest issues in the workplace today, causing over 70 million working days to be lost each year. Almost 1 in 6 people of working age have a diagnosable mental health condition. Alcohol related sickness absence costs business over £2 billion a year. 22% of London businesses reported absenteeism due to drug misuse.

What is the link between poor mental health and substance misuse?

Research shows that substance misuse can cause or increase symptoms of mental illness and prevent people making a full recovery. Also, poor mental health can sometimes lead someone to abuse substances.
