Description

Greenwich Mozart Festival 2018: Concert 3

Americana

Music by Delius, Barber, Mahler and Robert Matthew-Walker

St Alfege Church, Greenwich, London

July 28th | 7:30pm

Tickets: £15 - £30 + box office fee (concessions available for over 65s and students; please see info below)

Conductor: Christopher Petrie

Bassoon: Matthew Petrie

Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra of London

Programme:

Delius: Two Aquarelles

Robert Matthew-Walker: April in Appalachia (Bassoon Concerto) World premiere

Mahler: Adagietto from Symphony No. 5

*interval*

Barber: Adagio for Strings from String Quartet Op. 11

Delius: Sonata for Strings (arr. Fenby)

This concert explores music by composers who were inspired by or lived and worked in the USA; Barber who was American, Mahler conducting in New York in the final years of his life, Delius living in Florida in his formative years as a musician in his 20s, and Barber who was American.

We are very grateful for the generous support of the Delius Trust in making it possible to perform his astounding music and the World premiere of Robert Matthew-Walker's April in Appalacia, based loosely on themes from Delius's Appalachia, with Matthew Petrie as soloist.

Mahler's and Barber's Adagietto and Adagio are amongst the most strikingly beautiful and sincere compositions ever written, their long, sweeping melodies meaning so much to so many.
