Event Details

The purpose of this day is to undertake an emergency preparedness, resilience and response (EPRR) focused debrief of three of the recent major incidents in London: Westminster, London Bridge and Grenfell. The morning session will focus on the terror attacks, with the afternoon considering Grenfell.

There has already been significant focus on the clinical learning from these incidents – examining the patient injuries, triage and distribution.  Organisations will have undertaken their own debriefs to look at their own learning, and will be using the outcomes to update their emergency plans.  It is important to also consider the way in which the NHS as a system responded to the incidents, with a specific focus on:

  • Preparation
  • Alerting across the system
  • Command structures, their application and usefulness
  • Control of NHS resources
  • Communication
  • Media handling
  • Information requests and management
  • Patient information and sharing
  • Transition to recovery
  • Recovery process
  • Stakeholder engagement

These sessions will be independently facilitated to provide an appropriate forum for open and honest discussion; with the aim to gather NHS system wide learning and actions to take forward.  A report will be produced for the London Local Health Resilience Partnership, which will be shared with others who will find it of interest, and actions it will be tracked by the NHS England (London) EPRR team.

As well as capturing what we could do differently in the future, it is important that we capture the positives of what went well from these incidents to ensure that we continue to build upon our good planning and preparation in conjunction with our partners across the capital.
