Overview

Supporting Children to Make Sense of Grief and Loss

One-day Course

Children who are Looked After often face profound and complex experiences of grief and loss—from separation from birth families to multiple placement moves. This one-day course explores the emotional impact of these experiences and equips professionals with the tools to respond with empathy and understanding.

Course aims:

  • To deepen understanding of the emotional impact of grief and loss on children who are Looked After, including the short- and long-term effects on relationships, behaviour, and outcomes.
  • To explore a range of grief and loss models (including Kubler-Ross, Bowlby, and Parkes) and how these can inform supportive practice with children.
  • To recognise the varied ways children express and experience grief, especially in the context of multiple placements and disrupted attachments.
  • To provide practical strategies and tools for professionals and carers to support children through grief and help them process loss in healthy, constructive ways.
  • To encourage reflection on personal and professional experiences of grief, fostering empathy and insight into different grieving styles.
  • To develop a personalised action plan that enables participants to apply learning directly to their practice and improve outcomes for children.
  • To consider the ongoing impact of Covid-19 on children’s emotional wellbeing and how this intersects with experiences of grief and loss.

Attendees will reflect on their own experiences, share best practices, and leave with a personalised action plan to enhance their approach to supporting children through grief and loss. The course also considers the ongoing emotional impact of Covid on young people.
