Event description

Description

With a focus on stereotypes, Greek artist Katerina Fanouraki provokes, mocks, challenges and breaks down social, ethical, sexual and economic conventions. Her influences come not only from performance art but from contemporary dance.

In the artist’s own words: “Grotesque is important to me as a theory and art practice – it can terrify but at the same time be attractive. Fear attracts us in the grotesque while it also awakens the hidden preoccupation with death that we carry from the time we come to life.”

Katerina will launch the Grotesque exhibition at the Arts & Disability Forum Gallery with a performance of her 2011 work, 'Alice In Wonderland: Revised'. A provocative nod to Lewis Carroll's classic tale of the loss of childhood innocence, the performance is a challenging look at the artist's own experience of having innocence brutally taken from her through sexual abuse.

The performance begins promptly at 7.30pm and contains nudity as well as adult themes that some viewers may find upsetting.

Accessibility:

- Touch Tour of the exhibition available from 6.45pm on the evening of the launch.

- ISL/BSL translation available on request.

- Audio-description of both exhibition and performance are availble on request.
