Description

INFORMATION SHEET FOR PARTICIPANTS

We would like to invite you to take part in our research study on hypnosis. Please read this information sheet so you understand the purpose of the study and your involvement.

How do I sign up?

After reading this information sheet, if you are interested in participating, click the "Select a date" tab in the upper right corner of this window and select one of the available time slots and come to that session. All sessions will be held in the Curzon cinema (http://www.curzongoldsmiths.com/about/) in the Richard Hoggart Building at Goldsmiths, University of London. It is the main building of the University. You are welcome to bring friends/colleagues with you to the study but please email us (d.terhune@gold.ac.uk) if you are bringing more than 2 people.

Purpose

The purpose of this study is to measure hypnotizability (responsiveness to suggestions during hypnosis).

Who can take part in this study?

Anyone over the age of 18 can participate in this study.

Do I have to take part?

It is up to you to decide whether or not to take part. This information sheet describes the study and is yours to keep. If you decide to take part, you will be asked to sign a consent form to show you have agreed to participate. You are free to withdraw at any time and without giving a reason. A decision to withdraw at any time, or a decision not to take part, will not affect you in any way.

What will happen to me if I take part?

If you choose to take part, you will come to the specified location of the study. Upon arriving, you will be given a full explanation of the study and the opportunity to ask any questions. Next, you will be asked to sign a consent form. You may of course leave at any time during the experiment if you wish, without giving a reason. After completing the consent form, you will be given instructions in how to respond in the study. The study will involve a relaxation-based hypnotic induction and a set of suggestions for minor perceptual alterations from a standardized measure of hypnotizability that has been used with thousands of people. Nothing embarrassing will happen and you will not be asked about any personal information. The entire session will take approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes.

Compensation

You will be compensated £10 for participating.

What are the possible benefits of taking part?

There is no direct benefit to you if you take part in this study. It is hoped that the information obtained will help our understanding of the functions of the human mind.

Will my taking part in this study be kept confidential?

All information that is collected about you during the course of the research will be kept strictly confidential. Any information about you that leaves the Department will have been anonymised so that you cannot be identified from it. Fully anonymised data may be given to other researchers (e.g. students and collaborators) and research databases under the supervision of the principal investigator.

What will happen to the results of the research study?

We hope to publish the results of this study in a scientific journal. We may also present the results at a scientific conference or a seminar in a university. We may also publish the results on our website. We would be happy to discuss the results of the study with you and to send you a copy of the published results. It will not be possible to identify you in any report or publication.

Who has reviewed this study?

This research has been reviewed by and received ethics clearance through the Department Ethics Committee of the Department of Psychology of Goldsmiths, University of London.
