About this event

Group Walk - Leicester's former Leisure & Entertainment Venues

Sunday 28 September at 12.45pm

Starting from Town Hall Square, off Horsefair Street (near the Bike Park).

Up to 90 minutes, steady pace.

On this walk we'll take a light look at former leisure and entertainment venues in the city which have since closed. Some are within living memory, whilst others date from the 19th century. Join us to reminisce or simply to discover a little about Leicester in past times. This is a repeat of the walk first presented in 2023.

This walk is part of the September's heritage-themed Open Street's event in the city centre. Leicester Open Streets | Choose How You Move

Information about the pace of our walks (and much more) can be found on our Leicester City Council Group Walks page.

Public toilets are available in the Highcross and Haymarket shopping centres, about 10 minutes walk away. Please allow time to make your way to the start of the walk.

Booking information

This walk is free to attend, but places are limited so please book your place. Please see full booking information below. Please book via Eventbrite to secure your place or phone 0116 373 7589 (Monday to Friday 9am-5.30pm, not at weekends or bank holidays). Booking is not required for children (under 16) but they must be accompanied by an adult. If you are no longer able to attend, please let us know so we can open the opportunity to others.

Travel to the walk

Leicester city centre is served by buses. To help plan your journey to the walk try the Journey Planner tool on Choose How You Move website. Consider making your journey sustainably, by bus, cycle or on foot.

New Walkers

If you have not walked with Leicester City Council before we will ask you to complete our Walker Registration form. You will receive an email in the days leading up to the event explaining more about the new Walker form. You only need to do this once and can attend any of our walks thereafter (subject to booking a place on Eventbrite). The form is for adults only, children are not required to complete it.

Dress for the weather

Our group walks will go ahead in most weather so please dress appropriately for the conditions. We recommend:

  • Comfortable sturdy footwear
  • Bring a raincoat or umbrella in case of rain
  • On cooler days wear appropriate layers and a coat/jacket
  • On hot days wear sun protection (hat, sun screen)
  • Please bring a bottle of water with you.

Group size

We kindly ask walkers to book so we can keep our group size manageable.

Self-guided routes

If you have been unable to book onto one of our group walks, or you prefer to explore with your family or friends, self-guided routes are available to download from the routes page of our Choose How You Move website or via the Go Jauntly smartphone app. For other ideas, do check out our Walk Inspiration page which features walk videos and quiz trails.

Enjoy exploring Leicester on foot.
