Group Walk: Linking up West Leicester - Part 1:
Green spaces from Aylestone to Braunstone
Thursday 22 May at 11am
Starting in Aylestone village, outside the Black Horse pub, 65 Narrow Lane, LE2 8NA.
Finishing at Braunstone Leisure Centre on Hamelin Road, Braunstone, LE3 1JN.
Around 1 hour 45 minutes at a medium pace. 4 miles.
Linear (one-way) route, starting and finishing close to public transport.
Due to the terrain, we regret this is not an accessible walk.
At 4 miles, this is a longer walk than usual, aimed at those who like to step out, stretch their legs and try a sustainable* journey from start to finish (see Travel section). This all-terrain walk will be led at a medium pace - a little quicker than most of our walks. The walk links Aylestone with Braunstone, via pleasant green spaces and a few connecting streets. Along the way we pass through Aylestone Meadows, Mossdale Meadows, Shakespeare Park, St Peter's Open Space and Braunstone Park, enjoying the best of our green city. It includes natural paths and uneven terrain, which may be muddy in places - suitable footwear is required. We arrive at Braunstone Leisure Centre around 12.45pm, where toilets are available. Please bring your own refreshments for a brief rest stop. Part 1 finishes here.
If you're looking for further challenge, why not join us for Part 2, which starts at 1pm the same afternoon. Explore your journey options with the Choose how You Move journey planner - see Travel section below.
Information about the pace of our walks, what to wear/bring, the weather and much more can be found on our our Leicester City Council Group walks page: City Council Group Walks

Travel to the walk
* This is a great way to connect the city with a sustainable journey on foot and by public transport. The start and finish locations are close to bus stops, with a frequent service to the city centre. Walkers are encouraged to bus to the start point in Aylestone and bus back from Braunstone. (Note: There is no parking provision at the start in Aylestone).
The walk starts outside the Black Horse pub, on Narrow Lane, a short walk from Aylestone Road/ Lutterworth Rd, which are served by buses. The nearest bus stop is Middleton Street on Lutterworth Rd. Allow 10-minutes to walk to the pub.
The walk finishes at Braunstone Leisure Centre where there are toilets and a cafe. The leisure centre is nearby Hinckley Road, which is also served by buses. Walk volunteers will point out the nearest stops.
To help plan your journey via public transport, try the Choose How You Move Journey Planner tool.
New Walkers
If you have not walked with Leicester City Council before we will ask you to complete our Walker Registration form in advance. You can do this online or by phone. You will receive an email with a link to the online form in the days leading up to the event. You only need to do this once and can attend any of our walks thereafter (subject to booking a place on Eventbrite). If you are unable to complete the form digitally, paper copies will be made available. The form is for adults only, children are not required to complete it.
Dress for the weather
Remember to dress appropriately for the weather. Our group walks will go ahead in most weather. We recommend the following:
- Comfortable sturdy footwear
- Bring a raincoat or umbrella in case of rain
- On cooler days wear appropriate layers and a coat/jacket
- On hot days wear sun protection (hat, sun screen)
- Please bring a bottle of water with you, especially in warm weather.
Group size
Booking is required, so we can keep the group size manageable.
